Vacation-Style Remote Work (Workation) Office Space Established at Korea Maritime & Ocean University’s Innovation Convergence Campus

Busan Metropolitan City (Mayor Park Heong-joon) announced the establishment of the “Marine Cluster Workation Center” within the university-industry campus (Korea Maritime & Ocean University) in the innovation city, as part of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport’s Innovation Convergence Campus Development and Support Project. The center will open on July 7.

This initiative is part of the “Busan-Style Vacation-Style Remote Work (Workation) Promotion Project.” Based on a cooperative foundation that integrates education, research, and industry, the City has created a space where work and rest coexist. The goal is to secure a regionally tailored public workation model and encourage participation from institutions and professionals in the nearby marine industry-academic-research cooperation cluster to enhance the project’s effectiveness.

The “Marine Cluster Workation Center,” named “Mulmeong Lounge,” is located on the 10th floor of the University-Industry Hub Building at Korea Maritime & Ocean University. It offers an optimal work environment for staff of nearby related institutions and approved users from the university.

“Mulmeong Lounge” refers to a composite space designed to allow users to relax and contemplate with views of the sea, while also enabling flexible work and communication.

All seats offer ocean views. The space includes individual workstations, meeting rooms, and phone booths for both relaxation and collaborative work, along with amenities such as wireless internet and printing services.

This facility will be operated as an open, publicly-led space leveraging the geographic advantages of the marine industry-academic-research cluster. It will facilitate flexible exchanges of technology, information, and human resources among relevant institutions and companies in the area.

Looking ahead, the City plans to merge Busan’s identity as a marine industry-focused city with the rising demand for vacation-style remote work. By fostering continuous interaction and strategic collaboration with organizations in the nearby cluster, the City aims to attract talented professionals.

Furthermore, Busan Metropolitan City will develop the Innovation Convergence Campus office space into a core remote work site for regional industry-academia cooperation.

Through this, the City seeks to promote local youth settlement, employment and entrepreneurship, and to stimulate the local economy—ultimately contributing to improved living conditions in the region.

Meanwhile, the “Busan-Style Vacation-Style Remote Work (Workation) Promotion Project” aims to attract lifestyle population inflow by providing infrastructure for non-residents to work while staying in Busan. The project includes lodging support, tourism vouchers, and networking programs.

Kim Hyun-jae, Director General of the Busan Tourism and MICE Bureau, stated, “This new workspace goes beyond simply securing a physical location. It represents an evolution of the workation model by integrating Busan’s strengths in the marine industry and regional resources,” and added, “We will continue to organically connect the Innovation Convergence Campus Project with the Busan-Style Workation initiative to advance balanced regional development and attract young talent.”
