Busan, Hub of Film and Visual Culture

Rooted in the success of the Busan International Film Festival—Asia’s most recognized film festival, Busan is strategically nurturing the film and visual sector to reinforce its position as a global hub for visual culture and to bolster the local economy.

For the first time in Asia, UNESCO endorsed Busan as a City of Film in 2014. Since then, Busan has evolved into a vibrant center for visual content, organizing a broad array of flagship events, such as the Busan International Film Festival, the Busan International Short Film Festival, the Busan International Kids & Youth Film Festival, MAD STARS, and G-STAR.

It also continues to cultivate a thriving ecosystem through the Busan Content Market and the Asian Contents & Film Market. By expanding its talent pool and streamlining the entire visual content value chain—from investments and planning to production and distribution, Busan is steadily realizing its vision of becoming the capital of visual content creation and dissemination.

Public entities under the Ministry of Culture, Sports & Tourism—namely, the Korean Film Council, the Korea Media Rating Board, and the Game Rating & Administration Committee—have moved to Busan and are now fully operational. Anchored by the iconic Busan Cinema Center, Busan possesses a comprehensive visual media infrastructure, which encompasses the Busan Cultural Contents Complex, the Busan Post Lab, and the Busan Community Media Center—all committed to fostering both commercial and artistic productions.

In a push to build an integrated industrial cluster that unites public and private sectors, the Busan Film & Audiovisual Industry Center draws relevant companies. Meanwhile, the Busan Asian Film School, together with the relocated Korean Academy of Film Arts, seeks to train the next generation of film and media professionals.

Nestled in Nampo-dong, Jung-gu, the historic cradle of cinema in Busan, the Busan Museum of Movies offers a range of attractions beyond the film festival circuit.

With its extensive infrastructure, Busan is well on its way to capturing global powerhouse status within the visual industry.
