Busan University Students Propose the Future of Bujeon Station: “2025 Busan International Architecture Design Workshop” to Be Held

Busan Metropolitan City (Mayor Park Heong-joon) announced that it will host the “2025 Busan International Architecture Design Workshop” in collaboration with the Busan International Architecture Festival Organizing Committee (Executive Director Lee Seong-ho) at Domoheon from June 30 to July 1 under the theme “Connection and Communication – Urban-Architectural Integration Plan for the Bujeon Station Area.”

Since 2003, the Busan International Architecture Design Workshop has been held annually as an international architectural event, serving as a platform where domestic and international architects and students propose creative ideas to address urban and architectural issues in Busan.

The workshop brings together young architects from Busan and university students to develop design ideas, which are then evaluated by professional architects from Korea and abroad.

In this year’s workshop, nine young architects and 72 university students from the Busan region will form 18 teams to present proposals for the future of Bujeon Station.

Under the theme “Connection and Communication – Urban-Architectural Integration Plan for the Bujeon Station Area,” the teams will develop integrated urban-architectural ideas linking the planned Bujeon Station multimodal transfer center—a future gateway into the city—with surrounding areas.

The proposals are expected to feature three-dimensional (3D) masterplans connecting Bujeon Station with:

• ●the Busan Citizens Park plaza,

• ●designated urban development zones, and

• ●multi-level pedestrian connections.

This collaborative effort is expected to foster intergenerational exchange between students and architects by engaging with the shared context of “Busan” and the discipline of “architecture.”

Additionally, to broaden the architectural perspective of Busan students as future global talents, Busan’s Chief Architect Woo Shin-gu and renowned international architect Chris van Duijn of OMA will provide lectures, critiques, and evaluations.

OMA (Office for Metropolitan Architecture), following last year’s participant MVRDV, is a global architecture and urbanism firm with offices in New York, Rotterdam, Hong Kong, and Australia. Its major projects include:

The 18 works resulting from this workshop, each offering architectural visions for the Bujeon Station area, will be showcased to the public during the Busan International Architecture Festival at BEXCO from September 17 to 21.
