A New Children’s Cultural Complex Opens at Sasang District Office – “Sasangmaru Deullak Nallak” Launches Today (17th)

The Busan Metropolitan City (Mayor Park Heong-joon) announced that the Busan Children’s Cultural Complex, “Sasangmaru Deullak Nallak,”—a key anchor facility in the city’s 15-Minute City initiative—officially opens today (June 17) at the Sasang District Office.

○ Following the earlier “City Hall Deullak Nallak” project, this new space utilizes the lobby of a public office to create a large-scale children’s cultural complex.

○ The City and Sasang-gu will hold the opening ceremony at 2:00 PM on June 17 in the Hanmadang Hall (B1) of the Sasang District Office, with approximately 300 attendees including Mayor Park Heong-joon, District Mayor Cho Byeong-gil, local council members, children, parents, and childcare and kindergarten staff.

The project was selected in 2023 as part of Busan’s “Deullak Nallak” development initiative and was funded with KRW 4.5 billion. A traditionally rigid administrative space was remodeled into a complex cultural zone that fosters connection, friendliness, and child accessibility.

○ “Sasangmaru Deullak Nallak” is designed as an open space for children, families, and district visitors. It spans 2,205 square meters, covering the 1st floor lobby and the entire basement floor of the district office, and was created over a two-year period as a venue for cultural learning, art, and digital experiences that stimulate children’s creative senses.

Meanwhile, “Deullak Nallak” is Busan’s child-friendly cultural space initiative that transforms idle public spaces within 15-minute living zones into analog-digital hybrid learning playgrounds. It includes immersive content like themed libraries and experiential play zones, and has produced numerous successes.

○ Since Mayor Park first announced the vision in October 2021, the project has rapidly expanded. Currently, 106 sites have been created across Busan, with 83 already open and operational.

○ The reuse rate of idle spaces increased by 94%, with 1.5 million visitors in 2024 alone. Among these, City Hall Deullak Nallak saw an average of 18,000 visitors per month.

○ The initiative also won the Grand Prize at the “SDG City Awards” hosted by the UN ESCAP and Asia-Pacific Urban Cooperation Network and contributed to Busan being named the #1 city in child quality of life, solidifying its identity as a child-friendly city.

Mayor Park Heong-joon plans to state during his congratulatory speech:
“Busan Children’s Cultural Complex ‘Deullak Nallak’ is a model case of urban innovation utilizing idle space, drawing great interest not only nationwide but also from abroad.”

He added, “Following the success of City Hall Deullak Nallak, the Sasang District Office’s version has transformed an administrative center into a lively community space filled with children’s laughter. We will continue to identify more underused urban spaces and turn them into places of happiness that improve the quality of life for every Busan citizen.”
