The 6th Meeting of the Busan-Gyeongnam Administrative Integration Public Deliberation Committee Held – Discussions on Public Awareness Surveys and Other Agenda Items

Mayor Park Heong-joon of Busan announced that the 6th meeting of the Busan-Gyeongnam Administrative Integration Public Deliberation Committee (hereinafter referred to as “the Committee”) was held at 10:00 AM on May 13 at the (K)-Entrepreneurship Center in Jinju, Gyeongnam.

The meeting was attended by around 20 participants, including Co-Chairs Jeon Ho-hwan and Kwon Soon-ki, other committee members, and officials from both regions.

In accordance with the alternating hosting principle, this meeting was held in Jinju, Gyeongnam. The agenda included committee membership changes, plans for hosting citizen forums, and a joint research proposal. Subcommittee discussions and follow-up reporting also took place.

□ The committee is composed of three subcommittees: Planning & Communication, Local Autonomy, and Balanced Development. These groups discussed the content of a joint research project and the upcoming public awareness survey.

○ The Planning & Communication Subcommittee exchanged views on the future direction of citizen forums to be held in Busan and Gyeongnam and discussed public awareness survey questions tailored to the regional characteristics of each area.

○ The Local Autonomy Subcommittee discussed special provisions for fiscal autonomy and local tax rights under administrative integration.

○ The Balanced Development Subcommittee focused on strategic approaches for regional development.

□ In particular, the Local Autonomy and Balanced Development Subcommittees provided input on research support needed by the Committee for a joint research project to be carried out by the Busan and Gyeongnam Institutes beginning in June.

□ Moving forward, the Committee plans to hold regional citizen forums across Busan and Gyeongnam in June and July, followed by a public awareness survey.

○ These forums will be held across four designated regions within each province. The first forum is scheduled for June 13 in Yangsan, Gyeongnam.

○ After the forums, the public awareness survey will be conducted to assess citizens’ current views on administrative integration.

Co-Chair Jeon Ho-hwan stated,
“Recently, various groups—including city and provincial councils and the Bu-Ul-Gyeong Forum—have expressed opinions on the Busan-Gyeongnam administrative integration. We must gather ideas through public hearings, forums, and more to collectively respond to threats such as regional decline.”

Co-Chair Kwon Soon-ki added,
“It is especially meaningful to hold this meeting in Jinju—a key city in western Gyeongnam—at the (K)-Entrepreneurship Center, which honors the legacy of global entrepreneurs who led Korea’s economic miracle. Let us reflect on the spirit of entrepreneurship as we work together toward integration through innovation and change.”

□ The Committee plans to continue gathering public opinion on administrative integration in the second half of the year and will compile a public deliberation report incorporating citizen feedback to be submitted to both provinces.
