Yesterday, the Bank of Korea announced that a newly designed 5,000 won bill was released. It was developed to protect against counterfeiting and will be available from January 2.

During a press briefing, an official from the Bank of Korea said it released its new 5,000 won bill and it was already distributed to all domestic financial institutions. Citizens can begin using the new bill from Jan. 2. According to a bank source, “We are ready to do withdraw service of the old 5,000 won bill.”

Yet, there is a tip citizens have to keep in mind. The new bill can’t be used with automatic teller machines. Regarding the matter, the Bank of Korea and other financial institutions say, “Even if institutions have ATMs that are equipped with a device that enables ATMs to read the old version of the 5,000 won bill, it is not possible to read the new 5,000 won bill."
