Historic area to open 6 p.m. to midnight starting October 29, 2013
Every night, Bupyeong Kkangtong (tin can) Market will become a special place for shopping and cultural experiences. Starting October 29, Busan City operates a Pungmul (custom) Night Market at Bupyeong Kkangtong Market in Jung-gu (district) which promises to be full of things to see and enjoy. Foreigners and citizens of Busan as well as tourists can enjoy shopping until midnight and also taste traditional food.
Bupyeong Kkangtong Market, which opened in 1910, is where Busan’s representative staple, eomuk (fish cakes), became nationally famous, along with danpatjuk (sweet red bean porridge) and yubu (fried tofu) stew. Many tourists flock to this market to taste the local delicacies.
The night market includes the 110-meter (361-foot) arcade of Section 2 of Bupyeong Market, the existing shopping arcade and 30 vendor stalls. The area is composed of an eating zone (eomuk and yubu), sintoburi (domestic farm products are the best) zone, multicultural zone, hot zone (coffee, pasta) and merchandise zone. Cultural performances and other performances linked with festivals will be held at 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. daily at the entrance of Bupyeong Market and the four-way intersection in the market.
Bupyeong Kkangtong Market is a major traditional market of Busan that was established prior to the Japanese colonial era. Located near Gukje Market, the name is derived from canned goods that were brought from the United States to Busan during the Korean War. Canned fruit, fish and other war staples were imported and sold in the market, hence the market became known as “tin can market.” Today, visitors can buy liquor, fashion goods and mini-car sets, among other items.
“With the opening of the night market, we plan to make the traditional markets of Busan a must-visit tourism course for domestic and foreign tourists who come here for the unique things to see and eat,” said Hur Nam-sik, mayor of Busan.
