#01 Groundbreaking of Busan Citizens’ Park
Busan City broke ground on Busan Citizens’ Park at the former US Army base Camp Hialeah, which was finally returned to the city of Busan after 100 years. The project will begin with landscaping, river construction and exhibition facility work in 2012.
#02 Opening of the Busan Cinema Center
As the main venue of the Busan International Film Festival (BIFF), the Busan Cinema Center opened on September 29, 2011. This year’s BIFF at the Busan Cinema Center was a great success.
The Busan Cinema Center has already become Busan’s new landmark thanks to its architectural beauty.
#03 Busan now a top MICE City, ranked 4th in Asia, 17th in the World
On June 17th 2011, the Union of International Associations (UIA) announced the global ranking of convention cities for 2010, and ranked Busan 17th in the world and 4th in Asia. Busan City successfully hosted the Fourth High Level Forum on Aid Effectiveness (HLF-4) from November 29 to December 1, 2011 and has been selected to host the ITU’s 19th Plenipotentiary Conference in 2014.
Busan is the only non-capital city among the top 4 host cities of international conferences in Asia.
#04 Busan Port has become one of the world’s “Super Hub Ports.”
With the completion of four more berths at Busan New Port’s South Container Berth in December 2011, Busan New Port now has a total of 22 berths. The Busan New Port rail link (Busan New Port ~ Samnyangjin, 38.8 km), which was completed in December 2010, was officially opened in November 2011.
According to Busan City, the Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs, and Busan Port Authority (BPA), the accumulated container traffic handled by Busan Port has reached 16 million TEUs, breaking the previous record of 14.19 million TEUs.
#05 A hub of international logistics and global industry
Business investment volumes in the area of the Northern Hinterland of Busan New Port and in Mieum District have grown. Mieum District was designated as a foreign investment zone and has since emerged as a global cloud data center. Following infrastructure expansion and an improving investment environment in Busan, 37 firms moved to Busan from other regions in 2011.
#06 The Nakdong Riverside and Oncheoncheon Ecological Park
As part of the Nakdong River Restoration Project, waterfront areas around the Nakdong River were expanded and ecological parks (including at Samnak, Maekdo, Hwamyeong, and Daejeo) were built for the citizens’ enjoyment. The Hwamyeong-dong Outdoor Swimming Pool opened in August, 2011, and proved to be very popular with local citizens.
A health of a 7km stretch of the Oncheoncheon Stream, from Dusil-gyo Bridge, Geumjeong-gu District to Indo-gyo Bridge, in Dongnae-gu District, was also ecologically restored.
#07 Starting the ‘Hillside Road Renaissance’ project
As one of Busan’s urban regeneration projects, the first year of the Hillside Road Renaissance project has successfully been completed. The project focused on restoring the community and improving the residential environment of the area through creative urban regeneration efforts around the Hillside Road in this former downtown area of the city in 2011.
#08 Opening of the Busan-Gimhae Light Rail Transit
The opening of the Busan-Gimhae Light Rail Transit has improved access to Gimhae International Airport and revitalized the regional economy by increasing the mobility of the population in the West Busan area. Busan and Gimhae are now closer than ever, thanks to the opening of the Busan-Gimhae Light Rail Transit.
The public transport transfer system has been expanded to Gimhae and Yangsan, reducing the cost of citizens and increasing public transport usage.
#09 Completion of the Busan Coastal Beltway one step closer
The future completion of the Busan Coastal Beltway can now be visualized, with the Groundbreaking Ceremony for the construction of the Cheonmasan Tunnel taking place in December 2011. The completion of the urban beltway will reduce logistics costs and dramatically improve traffic circulation in many parts of the city.
In addition, a new Namhae tourism belt connecting Busan via Geoje, Namhae, Yeosu and Mokpo will invigorate the tourism industry and promote Busan’s city brand when completed.
#10 The nation’s highest birth rate
The number of babies born in Busan increased by 9.2% and the total birth rate increased by 11.7%, placing Busan at the top of the table, after the implementation of local birth promotion policies.
