Busan Mayor Hur Nam-sik recently called the city's hosting of this year's Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum “the biggest event for the city since the opening of the port.”

With the city gearing up for the Nov.12-19 APEC meeting, tightening security and improving public infrastructure, it wouldn't be a stretch to say that the local 'hospitality industry' is among the busiest segments.

Organizers of the meeting expect about 6,000 political leaders and businessmen from the 21 APEC member countries to attend this year's event, on top of about 4,000 Korean participants.

The city's hotels, expected to accommodate about 6,600 guests for the event, are now undergoing last-minute preparations, including upgrading facilities, improving food and beverage services and strengthening security measures.

“For the APEC forum to be considered a success, a lot of responsibility goes to Busan hotels. The level of the services they provide will significantly influence the impression of Busan as an international business hub and a tourist destination,” said Kim Dong-soo, the director of accommodation at the Busan city government's APEC organizing committee.

“The hotel industry in Busan has gained competitiveness over the years, with the city establishing itself as a tourist destination and also having a booming convention industry. We are confident that our hotels will provide a high level of service comparable to any place in the world,” he said.

Busan's hotel industry hopes that the APEC forum will benefit business by solidifying the city's image as an international economic hub.
