Busan is emerging as a leading contender to host the International Olympic Committee meeting in 2009. The southern port city is neck and neck with Copenhagen and Mexico City to host the plenary session, the Olympics magazine Around the Rings reported Monday.
It said Mexico City was the most attractive candidate at the moment, but Busan and Copenhagen were the only two among the nine hopefuls whose bids present no problems. Athens and Singapore hosted the meeting quite recently, while Cairo and Mexico City present safety concerns. The Latvian capital of Riga is too small and Switzerland’s Lausanne lacks adequate accommodation, it said.

Meanwhile, IOC administration director Thierry Sprunger told the magazine he sent a report containing itemized comparison of the nine cities to IOC members but it was not an evaluation. The 2009 meeting is to make key decisions for the future of the Olympics including election of next IOC president and selection of the host country for the 2016 summer games.
