The Ministry of Environment (MOE) will host the 5th Korea-Japan governmental meeting on environment and toxic substances which badly affect secretion of endocrine hormones, in Busan today.

The meeting will focus on discussing ways of coping with problems caused by harmful chemicals.

The ministry and its Japanese counterpart will finalize joint research and development projects to be implemented this year, while seeking ways of exchanging relevant information and closer cooperation.

The two countries have been jointly pushing for seven projects since 2003 including skill's development to examine hazardous substances that affect endocrine hormones, as well as technology to check the ecological influence of toxic chemicals, including dioxin, using minnows.

Dioxin tends to accumulate in the fatty tissue of fish and can have immediate and long-term negative effects, including skin disease, cancer, and reproductive failure.
