The Busan metropolitan city government and the Gyeongnam provincial government signed an agreement on the establishment of the nation's first standing consultative body between municipal governments.

Looking to build a closer cooperative relationship between them, the two municipalities will send liaison officers to each other. Acting mayor Oh Geo-don of Busan and acting governor Chang In-tae of Gyeongnam signed the agreement at the Busan-Gyeongnam Consultation Committee held in the City Hall Friday.

The agreement, which contains 7 articles, specifies that the permanent consultative body be led by the chiefs of planning and management from the two municipalities and that the two parties send liaison officers to each other.

It was also agreed that the two parties jointly operate the 7 already established overseas offices. Busan at present has offices in Miami in the U.S., Shanghai in China, and Osaka in Japan, while Gyeongnam has offices in Shanghai, Qingtao in China, Shimonoseki in Japan, and Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam.

The milestone agreement is expected to help resolve the pending issues between the two municipalities, such as the name and estate allocation of Busan New Port, the joint operation of horse races, the abolition of the development restriction zones, and the realignment of administrative units.
