20 foreign ambassadors got together in a Seoul auditorium last Tuesday (Oct. 31) to have a last rehearsal for their annual performance in Busan on Nov. 18.

The envoys, dubbed “Singing Ambassadors,” practiced singing “Yesterday” by The Beatles and “In the flower garden” by Korean singer Jo Gwan-wu.

Dho Young-shim, ambassador for tourism and sports, who has organized the Singing Ambassadors since 2002, specially invited Naomi Al-Midhadi, wife of Qatari Ambassador to Seoul Ahmed Al-Midhadi as conductor for the rehearsal.

Mrs. Al-Midhadi, professional vocalist and pianist, helped the ambassadors learn how to sing, Jo's song. When Al-Midhadi first sang the song for them, one ambassador said that he will give up because it is too difficult.

However, by the time the rehearsal was over, the ambassadors had made noticeable progress with the help of Mrs. Al-Midhadi. “I can't image such progress,” Dho said.

The ambassadors on hand were from Bulgaria, Chile, Costa Rica, Czech Republic, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Finland, Guatemala, Honduras, Hungary, Indonesia, Lebanon, Pakistan, Tunisia, Qatar, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Switzerland and the Philippines.

Singing Ambassadors currently consist of 27 foreign ambassadors, and the number has been gradually increasing.

“Singing Ambassadors' annual concert is becoming the most interesting event in the diplomatic community,” Dho said. “It is very pleasant for both the singers and the audience.”
