PIFF as APEC Official Event

The 10th Pusan International Film Festival (PIFF) is being pushed ahead as an official part of APEC summit. The first senior officials’ meeting (SOM), in which 21 assistant ministers and directors are scheduled to participate, had an official meeting on March 4th and confirmed the agenda to which they agreed on March 3rd.

Judging that APEC has long contributed to the economic and political discussions while having paid much less attention to cultural cooperation, SOM agreed to use the PIFF, a worldwide renowned film festival to develop cultural cooperation. With this decision, SOM agreed to open APEC special film festival together with PIFF events.

The Korean Foreign Ministry said, “19 out of the APEC member countries understood film impact would have great spill-over effects on their countries and the ministry stressed cultural effects. “We will discuss the details concerning time and venue of special film festival by closely consulting with the PIFF Secretariat,” the ministry disclosed.

To this end, APEC special film festival will be carried out at the governmental level, offering probably an largest-ever dimension of PIFF this year. Therefore APEC special event seems to be organized in Vietnam-sponsored APEC summit next year.
