Busan Global Village, the infrastructure for English programs to be a global city, will be run by a private Institute. Busan City announced this decision on June 17, 2008.

On June 26, the presentation of this privatization plan was held at City Hall. The application forms will accepted by September, and the final decision will be made public in October.

At first, Busan City Government and Busan Metropolitan City Office of Education reviewed the proposal to operate the Global Village directly. However, it was decided the Global Village will be open to the private sector to enhance the expertise and reduce the burden of operation costs.

The Global Village started to be constructed on the site of the former Gaeseong Middle School on October 2006, with the budget of 31 million U.S. dollars. The Village will have different kinds of English practice facilities, such as an airport, a subway station, an immigration office, a shopping center and a hospital where students will practice English just like in the real world. In addition, a cultural center in the Global Village will introduce the cultures of many countries.

One feature is that an English library will be located in the Village. The English library is the first of its kind in Korea.

The Global Village can accommodate 500 people a day, totaling 45,000 annually.

The programs, in connection with school English curriculum, will be provided for 5th graders to 9th graders.

The rate for use will be decided in consultation with a designated company, but the children from economically disadvantaged families will use the facility free of charge.

The building will be completed next May, and the programs will start around August 2009.
