In response to the sky-rocketing oil prices throughout the world, Busan City is implementing special energy saving policies for the City Hall. The city has been promoting energy saving policies including turning off office lights and partial operation of elevators in the City Hall for many years. In order to achieve further energy savings, the city is now launching this special project.

The city policy on energy saving includes:

Use of the air conditioner when the indoor temperature reaches 27 degrees Celsius, which is one degree higher than the central government’s recommendation, during the summer season from June to August. A No Tie, No Jacket Campaign will apply for all city officials in the office during the summer.

Elevator operations have been significantly reduced. Except during rush hours and lunchtime, the city usually stops running two of the elevators. Recently, it has expanded this to four.

About half of the office lights have been turned off and three-quarters of hallway lights haven’t been turned on.

The city is also seriously considering an early lights-out policy at the City Hall, advancing the time from 10 pm to 9 pm.

In addition, to prevent the dining hall from radiating too much heat during lunchtime in the summer season and for an environmentally-friendly atmosphere, the city will plant climbers such as morning glory, sponge gourd, and pumpkin on outdoor space of the third floor. Moreover, morning glories will be planted on the outdoor space of the second floor so that they cover the glass wall of the 2nd and 3rd floor. This will have a significant effect in reducing indoor temperatures.
