Gimhae Airport toward International Hub

Busan city administration determined to reestablish Gimhae airport as international airport with the opening of APEC summit this year. One of the biggest obstacles is especially about the time limit of airport and they are planning to have a talk with residents. In addition they plan to extend the operating hours the airport and scheme new airlines with APEC countries within this year. Busan city held a meeting at 11 a.m. on the 11th with air force the fifth tactics carriage flying corps, Korea Airports Corporation Busan Branch, Busan Regional Aviation Administration, Airlines, Gangseo gu office and discuss the plan to extend airport operating hour from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. to 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. Each organization agreed to the necessity of extending airport operating hours in order to activate airport and plan to have explanation convention to residents to persuade them. The residents near the Gimhae airport oppose the extension of airport hours due to airport noise problem. The organizations accept the requests of residents’ complaints through residents explanation meeting and plan to attain the object of extension of airport hours within this year.

Gimhae airport had difficulty in arranging flight schedules of Southeast Asian airlines because of comparably short airport operating hours unlike Incheon International airport which operates 24 hours or Kimpo airport which operates from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Currently Gimhae airport has 260 flights for 17 air routes and if the airport hours are extended, then 10 to 20 more flights can operate weekly.
Busan city and Korea Airports Corporation made a recommendation to the Ministry of Construction and Transportation for opening of Gimhae to Haneda direct flight route and plan to open new air routes to Malaysia and Australia with the APEC summit. Additionally Busan city administration intend to the construction of new international airport. Busan city spokesperson said that they plan to persuade to build a new airport as a long-term project for completion in 2020.
