Busan Metropolitan City to Develop Its Own Early Activation Strategy in Preparation for the Opening of Gadeokdo New Airport

Busan Metropolitan City, led by Mayor Park Heong-joon, announced that it will hold the kickoff briefing session for the “Research Service on Phased Implementation Strategies for Developing Gadeokdo New Airport into a Hub Airport” today (June 23) at 2:00 p.m. in the conference room on the 10th floor of City Hall.

The briefing session will begin with a presentation by the research service provider on the project’s implementation direction and detailed work plan, followed by an open discussion among participants.

Experts from the city’s New Airport Promotion Headquarters, related organizations, academia, and industry will attend and exchange a wide range of views on strategies for fostering Gadeokdo New Airport as a hub airport.

The research project is being undertaken to establish proactive and systematic strategies that will enable Gadeokdo New Airport to operate stably from the initial stage of its opening and develop into a Northeast Asian hub airport.

The project began on June 1 and will be conducted over a 12-month period. It will formulate phased growth strategies and detailed implementation plans covering all aspects of airport operations, including the expansion of medium- and long-haul strategic routes and the creation of aviation demand.

Meanwhile, the Gadeokdo New Airport construction project entered a new phase when the Daewoo Engineering & Construction Consortium began the basic design for site development works and the detailed design for priority construction sections on March 9. Construction of the priority sections is scheduled to begin by the end of 2026.

Now that the project is fully underway, attention must be focused not only on opening the airport as soon as possible but also on establishing strategies to secure operational stability immediately after opening.

Although the planned opening in 2035 is still some years away, Gadeokdo New Airport is a key piece of infrastructure for securing Busan’s future growth engine and strengthening its global competitiveness. Therefore, systematic preparations for its early activation must begin now.

Through this research project, Busan Metropolitan City plans to develop pre-opening strategies for Gadeokdo New Airport and consult with relevant organizations, including the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and the Gadeokdo New Airport Construction Authority, so that the findings can be reflected in future policies.

Park Jae-hong, Head of the New Airport Promotion Headquarters of Busan Metropolitan City, stated, “Gadeokdo New Airport is a core infrastructure project that will significantly enhance the Republic of Korea’s global logistics competitiveness, and its early activation is an urgent task for securing Busan’s future growth engine.”

He added, “We will do our utmost to ensure that Gadeokdo New Airport establishes differentiated competitiveness and becomes firmly positioned as a Northeast Asian hub airport at an early stage.”
