The
22nd Busan International Film Festival will host Asia’s biggest Virtual Reality
(VR) cinema event.
Many
film festivals around the world, including Cannes Film Festival, are
introducing films with VR technology and moving forwards to new future film
developments. Yet, despite the strong interest in VR for the film industry,
efforts have not led to notable results due to misunderstandings and
inexperience.
Busan
International Film Festival concluded an agreement with Barunson Co., Ltd., a
leading VR contents company in Korea, and will launch ‘VR CINEMA in BIFF’ in
October. It is not a temporary event during the festival period, but represents
a long-term project to support VR technology development.
Kang
Soo-youn, the Festival Director, mentioned that “Encounter between film and VR
technology as well as a good opportunity to become a complementary attempt. It
is important to think and find a method for how VR can help films reach a new
level. It is a theme that the festival will consistently focus on.”
Daniel
Kang, C.E.O. of Barunson Co., Ltd., also commented that “VR is very suitable to
combine culture contents. It is a highly valuable technology which can create
new markets in diverse fields.” He announced to promote VR combining projects
in various industries from now on.
According
to the agreement, Busan International Film Festival will open a VR CINEMA venue
for ten days at the Busan Cinema Center from its opening on October 12. More
than 30 VR films will be screened and a VR CINEMA conference will be held
during the Asian Film Market.
