Rupert
and her daughters saw that Gwangalli Beach was strewn with rubbish when typhoon
Chaba receded on Oct. 5 and came back with cleaning equipment to help clean it
up for four hours.
Rupert
is currently working at the Busan International Foreign School as a teacher.
The cleaning started with Rupert’s daughter Fiona’s suggestion, having been
influenced by an “Environmental Pollution” class she took at the school.
The
story was made public after a passer-by took a picture of them working and the
photo spread through social media and touched the hearts of Koreans across the
country. Some passers-bys at the scene
joined them in their clean-up efforts.
Various
social media sites, broadcasts on the news and daily newspapers have also praised
the mother and daughters, praising them as good examples for others to follow.
Mrs.
Rupert resides in Millak-dong, Suyeong-gu, where she thinks it has a safe and
convenient living environment for residents with a beautiful beach, bike paths
and more.
The
honorary foreign resident award will be given at Sumi Elementary School on
October 30, 2016 at 10:00AM.
