The
regeneration of Gamcheon into a cultural village of Saha-gu won the Educating
Cities’ Award.
Saha-gu
(The Republic of Korea), Espoo (Finland) and L'Hospitalet de Llobregat (Spain) received
the Educating Cities’ Award for good practices on living better together in our
cities on June 4, 2016 during the 14th IAEC Congress held in Rosario.
The
Mayor of Saha-gu, Mr. Kyung-Hoon Lee, presented the Gamcheon Cultural District:
a creative project that regenerated an underprivileged area into a cultural
neighborhood; a project that had the participation of its people and strengthened
their sense of belonging within their community.
IAEC
(International Association of Educating Cities) selected three projects among
the entries of 57 projects from 45 cities around the world for the Award.
Founded in 1994, the International Association of Educating Cities (IAEC) is a
non-profit Association with 471 member cities in 36 countries on all
continents.
Gamcheon
was refuge to many people fleeing to Busan during the Korean War. The Gamcheon
Cultural Village embraces the joys and sorrows of the Korean War refugees and
modern history of Busan. The creative
urban regeneration project started in 2010 and the success of the project
attracts 1,400,000 Korean and foreign tourists to the village annually.
