For
the “Turn Toward Busan” commemoration ceremony at 11 a.m. on November 11, the
world will turn and pay silent tribute towards Busan.
The
"Turn Toward Busan" commemoration has been held annually since 2008
on Nov. 11 in honor of the fallen heroes of the 1950-53 Korean War.
In
2007, Vincent Courtenay, a Korean War veteran suggested this campaign along
with simultaneous moment of silence and memorial ceremonies worldwide,
synchronized with the 11 a.m., November 11 core service in Busan. He called for
pausing for one minute and turning towards Busan where the only UN cemetery,
the United Nations Cemetery in Korea (UNMCK) is located. The UNMCK is a sacred
place for the UN fallen soldiers who sacrificed their lives during the Korean
War. It became a worldwide event to pray for peace, with several nations
including Canada, the United States, England, Australia, New Zealand, Belgium
and France joining the event.
The
Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs have encouraged the “Turn Toward
Busan” services throughout Korea and in all of the 21 nations of the United
Nations Allies, including the "Moment to Be One" on-line program in
which thousands of participants send messages and photographs to a special
interactive international website at http://turntowardbusan.com
2,300
people from 11 nations who fought and died during the 1950-53 Korean War are buried
at the world’s only UN cemetery, the UN Memorial Cemetery in Busan, Republic of
Korea.
A piano and choir concert to commemorate the event will be held at the outdoor stage of the Busan Cultural Center on November 11, 2016 from 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. You are all invited to the concert.
