Busan
Transportation Cooperation (BTC) adopted women-only cars on Metro Line 1 in a
test run on June 22, so that women, particularly pregnant women and women with infants
can ride with a sense of security.
The
trial run, limited to Busan Metro Line 1 for now, is aimed at providing comfort
and convenience to especially pregnant women and women with infants, as well as
to prevent various forms of crimes, including sexual harassment targeting
female passengers. The trial run will last three months, from June 22 to
September 21, between 7 and 9 a.m., and 6 and 8 p.m. daily during rush hours.
The fifth car on 8-car metro trains is designated as women-only cars.
To
encourage metro passengers to voluntarily and actively participate in the new
policy, the BTC is promoting it in various ways. The announcement introducing
the new policy will be made regularly in metro cars and the “Women-only” signs
will be clearly placed in the designated metro cars.
After three months, BTC will decide whether to continue with the cars, depending on passenger opinions.
