The 17th Busan International Film Festival Concluded in Grand Finale

Busan Metropolitan City successfully held the 17th Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) for 10 days from October 4 to 13. BIFF was first launched as the first international film festival in Korea in 1996 and now became the biggest film festival in the entire Asia.

 

This year’s event attracted more than 220,000 visitors, which was the largest number since the launching of this event. 304 movies from 75 countries were presented to the visitors. The opening film Cold War and other intriguing films such as Dangerous Relationship, Namyoung-dong 1985, Pluto, and Suspect X saw their tickets all sold out. The Asia Film Market which accompanied the movie festival was a great success too, where 70 movies, which increased by 10 from the last year, were run 80 times. Also, there were 40 movies, which increased by 5 from the previous year, were presented in the premiere event, as well.

 

Also in this year’s event, 4,830 domestic guests, along with 860 overseas guests, 2,149 Cinephil guests, 1,098 buyers, 279 delegates for Busan Film Forum, and 2,357 media workers (totaling to 11,519) participated, which evidenced the popularity and high regard held by the public for the festival.

 

BIFF Executive Commissioner Lee Yong-Gwan said, “This year’s event was extended by one more day compared to the previous ones, which allowed us to have two weekends over the duration of the event that gave us more opportunities to meet our visitors.”
