The Bank of Korea Busan Branch Opens Money Museum on September 11.

The Busan branch of the Bank of Korea opened a Money Museum on September 11, 2013.

The Museum is located on the first floor of the Bank of Korea, Busan branch in the Busan International Finance Center in Nam-gu District. It features the role and history of the Bank of Korea, as well as the history of money.  The museum also houses a detailed exhibit on a variety of currencies from around the world.

 

The Money Museum exhibits a total of more than 600 foreign and Korean bills and coins including about 270 currencies from ancient, modern and current times.  Also on display are 140 Korean commemorative coins, 120 foreign commemorative coins from England and China, and 70 foreign bills. In particular, collectible proof silver and gold coins featuring Star Wars, Les Misérables, Puss in Boots, Marilyn Monroe, Australian kangaroos, marine creatures, and colored silver coins characterizing 47 prefectures in Japan are also included in the exhibit. 

 

The highlight of the museum is a 10 billion won cube which consists of one million 10,000 won bills. If the bills in the cube were to be piled up one on top of the other, the pile will be 110 meters high, which is only slightly lower than the Busan Tower at a height of 120 meters.  

The Museum is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and closed on weekends and public holidays. There is no admission fee, but individual visitors must present identification and groups of more than 10 people must make a reservation.
