Busan-Jinhae Free Economic Zone Authority has signed a memorandum of understanding with Friedrich Alexander University for the German university to open a graduate school and research institute in the zone, the authority said recently in a release.

In the first opening of a foreign university in the zone, Friedrich Alexander will set up a graduate school and a life science research center similar to an institute it runs in Germany. The BJFEZ is also in talks with Macquarie University of Australia to establish a master’s in business administration school at the zone.

“To attract investment, the zone needs to build not only infrastructure but also schools, hospitals and research institutions,” Kim Moon-hee, head of the BJFEZ, said in a statement.

Kim said free economic zones are different from free trade areas such as industrial parks. FEZs are self-sufficient cities where people can live and work.

Friedrich Alexander University is 265 years old and has five colleges and 265 different majors. It has 26,600 students and 11,600 faculty members and employees. The school’s chemical and life science research institute receives the largest research-related government funding among similar institutions in Germany, according to the BJFEZ.
