The entire area of the UN Memorial Cemetery has been designated as the Busan Nam-gu Special Peace and Culture Zone for the United Nations, the first such designation of its kind anywhere in the world.

The Ministry of Knowledge Economy announced that the 570,000 square meter UN Memorial Cemetery site in Nam-gu was officially designated as a Special Peace and Culture Zone for the United Nations on May 19.

The project includes establishing a memorial hall in Danggok Park, a Busan Art Center with a Youth Square, the designation and transformation of the Daehak-ro, in Nam-gu, as a Cultural Street, and boosting the scale of the Oryukdo U.N. Festival with a total budget of 108 billion won. The project is scheduled to be completed by 2015.

Collaborating with the private sector in the region, such as the International Peace Memorial Foundation(IPMF), universities and merchant associations, Nam-gu District plans to attract domestic and overseas tourists through various projects and unique programs under the theme of a “United Nation”.

In particular, the IPMF plans to proceed with plenty of projects, including the construction of the U.N. Peace Memorial Hall, the foundation of an International Peace Film Festival, the U.N. Peace Festival, the Busan International Youth Award, the Children’s Model U.N. General Assembly, and a Peace Village for Multicultural Families.

“The designation of the special Peace and Culture Zone for the United Nations around the UN Memorial Cemetery is expected to recover and boost the regional economy and business” said a Nam-gu District official, who added, “We will turn the special zone into a new tourist attraction of Busan.”
