Buk-gu District opened a barrier-free footpath through the forest from Ssamji Park in Gupo 2-dong via Baekyang High School to the street behind Gunam Middle School on May 28.

The barrier-free walking path with a gentle gradient is aimed at allowing anyone who has difficulties hiking, including the disabled, the elderly, pregnant women and children, to enjoy walking in the forest.

A 5 billion won footpath project around Mt. Baekyang was started last year and is due to be completed by 2014 by Buk-gu District.

The footpath’s gentle gradient makes it wheelchair and stroller accessible, and the path has been widened to between 1.5 meters to 2 meters. Cypress, prunus yedoensis, maple and wild flowers have been planted by the footpath. A parking lot for the disabled has been built at the entrance to the path.

The second phase of the project will begin this July. The walking path between Turtle Rock and Maetdol Rock in Mt. Baekyang will be built and there are plans to establish an observatory as well.

Disconnected mountain trails will be reconnected and, for the safety of walkers, the path will be improved.

An official of Buk-gu said, “We are striving to build convenient and safe footpaths all over Buk-gu so that Busan citizens may enjoy the beauty of nature, particularly by walking through its mountainside forests.”
