Sculpture to Commemorate 20 years of Sister City Relationship between Busan and Surabaya Unveiled

The City of Busan held an opening ceremony to unveil a commemorative sculpture from Surabaya, Indonesia on July 2, 2014. Roughly 60 people including Busan Mayor Suh Byung-soo, Surabaya Mayor Tri Rismaharini, vice-ambassador of the Indonesian Embassy in Korea participated in the ceremony.
The sculpture, resembling a shark and a crocodile, celebrates 20 years of Sister City Relationship between Busan and Surabaya. The City of Busan installed the sculpture in front of the Busan Indonesia Center in June, 2014. The center is located at 357, Geumgok-daero, Buk-gu. (Website: http://indonesiacenter.or.kr/idc/)
Surabaya, which is not only the 2nd largest city in Indonesia is also home to the nation’s largest port and signed a Sister City Relationship with Busan in 1994. The exchange between the two cities has been active in various fields including administration, environment, education and urban issues. The Busan and Surabaya City Councils signed a joint declaration for amicable exchanges in October 2013 and Dongeui University has been running the Surabaya Teacher Training program since 2013.
Currently, about 2,000 Indonesians reside in Busan with another 6000 in the Ulsan and Gyeongnam areas. The City of Busan has been supporting foreign residents through the Busan Global Center and the Busan Foreign Workers Support Center.
