Experts to tackle world population issues in Busan

Experts from around the world will converge in Busan to seek solutions to the problem of low birth rates and aging societies. The 27th International Population Conference - known as the United Nations population olympics - of the International Union for the Scientific Study of Population (IUSSP) will be held Aug. 26-31 at Haeundae BEXCO. Expected to attend are 2,000 experts from overseas and 500 from Korea, including academics and government officials.

The conference is known as a forum where more than 2,000 of the latest theses related to global population are presented.

Experts will discuss ways to solve issues such as low birth rates and declining and aging populations, and provide directions to mid to long-term policy measures.

The IUUSP conference began in 1947 and is held every four years, and this will be its first time in Korea.

Busan was chosen, in part, because Korea has the world's lowest fertility rate (1.3 children per woman of childbearing age as of the end of 2012) and the city recorded an ultra-low fertility rate of 0.94 in 2009. For 13 years starting from 1997, Busan had the lowest fertility rate of any city in Korea. However, the city's fertility rate has shown dramatic improvement, a turnaround that will be a topic of discussion at this year's conference.

An official of Busan city said, "This is a forum where world's renowned academics gather to seek clear solutions to low birth rate and aging society issues. We believe that this conference will enhance Busan's status as a convention city of the world."
