A powerful typhoon accompanied with gales and downpours that hit the Korean peninsula during Chuseok or Korean Thanksgiving is believed to have left as many as 130 people dead or missing. More than 1.6 million households across the nation suffered from power failures caused by Typhoon Maemi.

With their houses flooded or buried in landslides, 1,416 victims from 562 households in Gyeongnam and Gyeongbuk regions have been accommodated in neighborhood schools or town halls.

Strong winds did serious industrial damage to the nation, overthrowing a number of 900-ton container cranes in Busan, destroying railways and roads, flooding rice paddies, orchards and marine farms.

Typhoon Maemi packed a gale on Friday afternoon that recorded a velocity of 60 meters per hour, the highest in Korean history. Early Saturday morning, it left Uljin, Gyeongbuk, and made its way to the East Sea. With additional flood warnings being issued along the Nakdong River, however, further damage is expected in the southeastern regions.
