Busan International Foreign School, an educational institution that could meet schooling needs for expat families living in the southeast region of Korea, will open this coming August.

Busan Metropolitan City announced Monday (May 10) that it expects to receive final approval from the city’s Office of Education in the month of May and hold an explanatory session for some 100 expat families living in the region, all before the official opening of the school.

Construction on the school in Gijang-eup, Gijang County began in November 2008. The city injected 46.9 billion won to build a five-story building that has over 15,000 square meters of floor space on almost 3 hectares of land. The new school has 36 classrooms as well as a music room, computer room, gym and other purpose-built rooms.

The curriculum will cover kindergarten through high school and can accommodate up to 720 students. Korean students who have lived abroad for at least three years are eligible to apply, but only up to 30 percent of the total student body.

“We realized how important it is to improve the environment for education in the process of attracting foreign companies to our industrial complex,” explained a Busan City official. “The new Busan International Foreign School expects to improve children’s education for expat families living in this area and in the long term, help to attract more investment from abroad to contribute to the regional economy.”
