Groundbreaking of International Cruise Terminal at Busan North Port

Construction of the new International Cruise and International Passenger Ferry Terminals at Busan's redeveloped North Port site has started.
Busan Port Construction Office of the Busan Regional Maritime Affairs & Port Office held the Groundbreaking Ceremony for the construction of the international cruise and international passenger ferry terminals on May 18, 2012. With a total investment of 56.6 billion won, construction of the 718 meter long international passenger ferry terminal and 360 meter long international cruise terminal is scheduled to be completed in November, 2014. 

When construction is completed, a 100,000-ton cruise ship, five 20,000-ton cruise ships and eight 500-ton cruise ships will be able to dock simultaneously at the North Port. In order to berth 100,000-ton cruise ships, measuring some 300 meters in length, and with a width of about 40 meters, a 360 meter long pier and a water depth of 12 meters is required.

The current International Cruise Terminal, located in Dongsam-dong, Yeongdo-gu, has a cruise pier  capable of only accommodating 80000-ton cruise ships and its location is too far from the downtown area to allow for convenient shopping and tourism. 
The new cruise terminal will be located right by Busan Station, making life very convenient for cruise passengers transferring to and from Korea's rail network. 
A manager of the Busan Port Construction Office said, “Previously the North Port was used mainly for container ships. Along with the North Port redevelopment project, developing Busan Port as a center of international marine tourism, the ability to berth large cruise ships in the heart of the downtown area will make a big difference to the city's future status as a cruise home port and port of call.”
