The city’s most picturesque icon serves as background for Korean films and fireworks festival
Diamond Bridge (Gwangan Bridge, meaning large and spacious bridge and called Diamond Bridge in English), the symbol of Busan, celebrates its 10th anniversary this year. Since it opened on June 1, 2003, the bridge, like its name “Diamond,” has come to epitomize the beautiful city of Busan.
Like the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, Tower Bridge in London, Pont Alexandre III in Paris and the suspension bridge on the Danube in Budapest, Hungary, Diamond Bridge has become a world-famous bridge that symbolizes the city of Busan.
Diamond Bridge is not merely a crossing, but also the hallmark of the city and the center of its scenery and festivals. With a length of 7.42 kilometers or 4.6 miles (suspension bridge is 900 meters), it is also Korea’s largest and longest marine bridge. It also possesses aesthetic qualities and a state-of-the-art lighting system.
From Diamond Bridge, one can get a bird’s eye view of the symbols of Busan such as the mountains, sea and river, major tourist attractions, residential areas, Centum City, and Marine City. That’s not all.
The Busan Fireworks Festival, is held every October and impresses the city with its dazzling displays, is held at Diamond Bridge. The festival was first held during the 2005 APEC Summit, and it is attended by 1.3 million people every year.
The reason why the Busan Fireworks Festival is deemed “the world’s best” is because of Diamond Bridge. Only Diamond Bridge can produce firework displays that resemble Niagara Falls and impress both foreign and domestic tourists who come to the festival.
In the list of “50 Most Beautiful Places to Visit in Korea” by CNN in 2012, Diamond Bridge placed fourth. Britain’s BBC broadcast a program last October that introduced the attractiveness of Diamond Bridge.
In the 2006 “100 Most Beautiful Roads in Korea,” Diamond Bridge was labeled “excellent.” The bridge is also popular filming location for Korean movies. Among the 331 feature films that were shot in Busan, Diamond Bridge was the main stage for 25 of them.
Most blockbuster Korean films include views of Diamond Bridge, Marine City and Haeundae. The hotels, department stores and skyscrapers of Centum City were built to create a halo effect with Diamond Bridge.
The price of apartments varies by 10-20 percent according to the view of the Diamond Bridge.
