The Dongnam Inst. of Radiological and Medical Sciences – created to specialize in cancer treatment and radiological research in Busan – officially launched on July 16.

The center opened after a three-month pilot run after construction wrapped up on April 23.

The institute is equipped with high-technology machines as well as talented doctors. Its overall goal is to introduce the Particle Therapy by 2015 and make Busan a leader in cancer treatment.

The nine-story center is located at Gijang County Jangan-eup Jwadong-ri and occupies 73,451 square meters. It also has a total of 304 wards.

The institute has established a system to concentrate on and treat thyroid, breast and stomach cancer as well as other ailments. It also features an on-site clinic that focuses on prevention and health promotion programs for citizens.

Since the center opened, it has been developing the Particle Therapy. It plans to complete the therapy by 2015. The advanced piece of equipment will be used for basic science research and to treat lung cancer and liver cancer.

Officials hope the center will quickly become out of the top institutes of its kind in the world.

State-of-the art medical equipment makes local debut.

The Dongnam Inst. of Radiological and Medical Sciences has become a leader in bringing advanced cancer treatment to the region. It ranks as the first center here to introduce an Image-Guided Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IG-IMRT), CyberKnife and Particle Therapy, giving it a well-deserved reputation as a regional leader in the field.

It boasts five distinct cancer treatment centers, including ones focusing on breast, thyroid, digestion and chest cancer. Much of the equipment made its debut in Korea at the center.

The IG-IMRT targets cancer with a 360-degree revolution system, while the CyberKnife delivers concentrated beams of radiation to tumors with extreme accuracy.

It also tracks the tumor’s position.
