Busan has set up an observatory equipped with benches and other facilities halfway up Mt. Ami at a cost of 150 million won ($160,000).

This facility aims at helping visitors watch the estuary of the Nakdong River in a more comfortable atmosphere.

The central government has designated five areas subject to conservation-protection and special supervision along the Nakdong River estuary after it was made a state cultural asset in 1966.

The Mt. Ami observatory is an ideal spot where visitors are able to enjoy watching endangered migrant birds, such as flocks of white herons in the nearby wetlands and groups of oxbirds.

The route to the observatory has been listed as a bird-watching trail for those who will take part in the 10th Ramsar Convention on Wetlands Conference slated for Oct. 28-Nov. 4 in the neighboring Gyeongsangnam-do.

The city plans to turn the Mt. Ami observatory into a part of the triangular bird-watching axis along with Nakdong Estruary ecocenter and Myeongji observatory.
