Seeks to turn Gangseo into International Logistics Center as part of national administrative tasks
Large-scale projects eyed by Busan to accelerate the city's development have come one step closer to realization with the launch of the new administration. The government has decided to include these projects in its national administrative tasks and promote them. Among them are the projects to develop the rear base of the New Busan Port in Gangseo District and redevelop the North Port.
According to Busan City and other sources, the new government finalized five national administrative goals and 192 tasks during its transitional period in mid-February for the construction of a "first-rate, advanced country." The five goals include energetic market economy, superpower of talents, global Korea, positive welfare and devoted government. One of the administrative tasks is the "creation of a Dubai-style port-business valley."It calls for: creating a rear base in the New Busan Port and pushing for the attraction of foreign investment; building an International Logistics Center or ILC in Gangseo and its vicinity; and constructing an environment-friendly waterfront by redeveloping the North Port.
In detail, this task clearly stipulates the creation of an ILC that is connected to the airport, railway and canal in the 50 square-kilometer area of Gangseo District. This is in accordance with the blueprint on building a state-of-the-art logistics industry city in Ganeseo originally planned in the "vision projects for the rehabilitation of Busan City's economy."
It also will start to redevelop North Port in the second half of 2008, starting with the first phase, in which it would rebuild the Central and Second Ports as maritime culture and IT-video display zones, respectively, while transferring the existing function of port to the New Port's multipurpose wharf.
"The new government has identified key projects and decided to promote them as state projects, providing a strong political and institutional basis for the revival of Busan's economy," Mayor Hur Nam-sik said, pledging to do his best to rebuild Busan's economy by carrying out these tasks.
