Korean culture & tourism guides who have a high level of spoken proficiency in visitors’ various native languages will soon guide domestic and international visitors around tourist sights in Busan.

Busan Metropolitan City has decided to station 20 trained culture & tourism guides to help give domestic and international visitors alike a deeper understanding of the culture and history of Busan.

In January, the Busan City government selected 20 people from 117 applicants to be culture & tourism guides after checking their academic and professional qualifications, language proficiency and volunteering experience.

They will take lectures and receive on-the-job training for a total of 80 hours from March 4 to April 4, and will then start their volunteer activities from this May at some of the city’s major tourist sites, including Busan Museum, Bokcheon old tombs, Beomeosa (Temple), Geumjeongsanseong (Mountain Fortress), and Taejongdae.

Most of them have volunteered in the past for such international events as the Pusan International Film Festival (PIFF) and Busan Asian Games.

With Busan’s emerging status as a port of call for international cruises, and the city’s growing stature as an international convention destination, the presence of guides with strong foreign language skills will help participants at events such as the Korea-China-Japan Summit to enjoy their time here more.

Currently, 68 culture and tourism guides have been volunteering at tourist sites in Busan.
