New Subway attracts commuters
Opening of line No. 3 adds 17 stations

Subway line No. 3 rolled into motion in November, adding greater convenience to an already extensive underground rail network across Busan that now includes 90 stations and 88.8 kilometers of track.

The opening of line No. 3 marks the latest addition to a subway system that began serving the public in 1985 with the first stage of line No. 1.

The newest section extends 18.3 kilometers, and includes 17 stations from Suyeong-gu Suyeong junction to Gangseo-gu Daejeodong. It provides transfer points to line No. 1 at Yeonsan-dong station, and to line No. 2 at Suyeong station.

As of now, 324 trains are scheduled to run along this line each day from 5:10 a.m. to 12:45 a.m. Trains arrive every five minutes during rush hour, and at seven-minute intervals at other times of the day.

Officials said the new subway line would help reduce congestion around Mandeokro and Minam junctions, and at Yeonsan junction, where motor vehicle traffic is quite high.

A number of safety measures have been incorporated into line No. 3’s train cars and platforms.
In a first for Korea, every platform contains sliding doors that prevent an accidental fall on the tracks, as well as sprinklers. The car interiors, such as seats and handles, are fireproof. The new trains were built from Korean technology
