Biracial citizens will be allowed to become police officers from next year.

The National Police Agency (NPA) said on Wednesday (May 10) that it would recruit mixed-race applicants as a measure to abolish past discrimination against them.

The NPA plans to employ multiracial people having Korean nationality and expertise such as foreign language skills as police officers. They will be posted in regions with high foreign polulations like Ansan, Gyeonggi Province, where 25,000 foreigners live.

The mixed-race officers will be deployed as early as the first half of next year after six months of training. The number of recruits has not been decided.

For the recruitment, the authorities are working on revising related laws.

The NPA will also encourage biracial people who want to serve in the army to apply for riot police duty.

The authority plans to allow biracial people to join the military together with their friends, so that they can better adapt themselves to the army.

The police will also give lectures about human rights protection and multiracial people to its employees to foster tolerance and awareness within the force.

Authorities plan to prevent the bullying of biracial students at academies by working with school police, while supporting the students of poor families along with civic groups.
