SEEKING AND PONDERING - JANG YOUNG-SIL AND THE WORLD OF SCIENCE

Busan City will hold a special exhibition called "Seeking and Pondering - Jang Young-sil and the World of Science" at the Busan Museum from July 10 until August 15.

The exhibition will feature the life of Jang Young-sil, a Korean scientist and astronomer during the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910), outlining his achievements and their historical significance, regarding their influence on the development of science and technology across future generations. The exhibition will recognize Korea during the Joseon Dynasty as an advanced nation in the area of science.

The exhibition will display some 100 relics relating to the fields of astronomy, timekeeping, printing, pharmacy, architecture, meteorology and military during the Joseon Dynasty. In particular, it will provide a rare opportunity to see a portable sun clock called Hyeonju Ilgu and 3 listed national treasures, including the Bullyudugongbusi-gwon 13 (Treasure No. 1051, Gyeonggi Provincial Museum), the Angbuilgu (Hemispherical Sundial) (Treasure No. 845, Royal Museum) and Tongdosa Geumdongcheonmundo (Treasure No. 1373, Tongdosa Temple) which were all invented in the 15th century.

In addition, a number of side events will be held – like “Spot the relics in a bird's-eye view of Changdeok Palace”, “Playing the Pyeongyeong, a traditional Korean percussion instrument” and “Making a science history book.”

The exhibition, by focusing on the historical, social and cultural significance of the scientific achievements of Jang Yong-sil, expects to enhance the public’s interest in traditional science.
