Overtakes Incheon International Airport in 3 Years

Busan Port reemerged as the nation's No. 1 gate for international trade last year, catching up with Incheon International Airport.

Busan has exceeded Incheon airport in export cargo handling from 2005, but imports had lagged behind Incheon by a narrow gap for three years until it finally beat the airport by 2 percent last year.

According to Busan Main Customs, exports through Busan Port last year rose 15 percent from 2006 to $113.95 billion, and imports jumped 20 percent to $95.81 billion over the cited period. These account for 31 percent and 27 percent, respectively, of the nation's total exports and imports.

By items, general machinery took up 18 percent of the total, or $20.76 billion worth, to emerge as the single biggest export item, followed by electric-electronics (16 percent), rubberplastics (11 percent), automobiles (10 percent) and textile-garments (9 percent).

In imports, too, general machinery topped the list with 20 percent, or $18.88 billion, chased by steel (11 percent), electric-electronics (8 percent) and rubber-plastics (7 percent), the reportt said, adding such a trend will continue for the time being.
