The 2nd Busan Maru International Music Festival, hosted by Busan Metropolitan City and organized by Busan Maru International Music Festival Organizing Committee, will be held from August 30 through September 3 at Busan Cultural Center.
Under the theme of ‘Musical Globalization’, worldwide music and musicians from Japan, the United States, France and Republic of Korea are scheduled to be performed. Music was already globalized and the festival would like to present these globalized music to globalize music once again.
As the first of its kind among international music festivals to be held in Republic of Korea, the western music and Korean traditional music both will be played in this year’s festival.
Each concert has its own different theme under the theme of ‘Music Globalization’.
The opening concert by the Tokyo City Philharmonic Orchestra on August 30, the essence of Gugak concert by the Gugak performance group of Busan National Gugak Center on August 31 and the closing concert by the Busan Philharmonic Orchestra on September 3 will take place at Busan Cultural Center.

About 700 musicians from 43 orchestras and ensembles performing in the Busan and other regions including Seoul, Gwangju, Changweon, Jinju and Ulsan are scheduled to perform fringe concerts from August 27 through 28 at a number of Busan’s beautiful attractions including Busan Station square, Yongdusan Park, Oncheoncheon Citizens’ Park, Millak Waterfront Park, Metro stations (Jagalchi, Suyeong, Centum City, Yeonsan, Pusan National University, Seomyeon, Beomil, Kyungsung Univ. ∙ Pukyong Nat’l Univ. Sasang, Deokcheon) and other places in and around Busan City.
The aim of the Fringe Concerts is to provide an opportunity for regional classical musicians to perform for the public, to promote a music-loving culture regionally and to boost the festive mood during the festival.

*‘Maru’ means the summit of a mountain or a roof in Korean, and so the name of the festival implies its goal to become the best symphony festival in the nation, attracting the world’s top musicians.
