A total of 10 solar and wind powered LED street lights have been installed at four locations in Busan – Amisan Observatory, Hwamyeong Arboretum, Jungang Park and Taejongdae.
The electricity generated by the small wind and solar generators will light up the streetlights for 4~6 hours/night.
The 10-meter high streetlights are equipped with a blade for generating wind power, and two solar panels, and generate 1 MW of electricity per year. Their best feature is the fact that they create no carbon dioxide emissions.
Busan City plans to expand their installation along coastal roads and breakwaters as well.
This project was suggested by the Busan-based company BN Group. The company has installed the streetlights since August 2010 with a total investment of 130 million won and will continue to manage them for two years. Busan City provided the land for their installation.
A city official said, “This environmentally friendly streetlight generates electricity from the wind and sun. …We anticipate that this will help to reduce greenhouse gases and climate change. In addition, it will be utilized in education programs with a more environmentally friendly message.”
