The City of Busan has announced that it will continue the Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) Project in 2014, thanks to the achievements of the CPTED pilot project in 2013.
The project aims to protect vulnerable social groups from crime and provide a convenient, pleasant living environment for residents.
The 2013 CPTED project, which targeted crime patterns in four crime-vulnerable-areas in the city, was successfully completed after comprehensive consideration of area characteristics and resident awareness through the use of various environmental crime and residential investigations.
With a total project cost of 0.5 billion won, the 2014 CPTED project will be executed in the areas of Beomcheon-dong and Gaegeum-dong in Busanjin-gu as well as Munhyeon-dong in Nam-gu. The city plans to get local residents involved during every stage of the project. In this regard, a public design competition will be held to reflect the ideas of citizens regarding the project.
In addition, to ensure a wide range of opinions are included in the decision making process, the city will operate an advisory committee consisting of experts in criminal psychology, children and youths as well as community activists.
Other areas of the project involve emergency bells being installed in areas of concern to help prevent crimes targeting women in Busan. This customized CPTED project, targeting specific regions of the city, reflects the new paradigm of an administration focused on prevention.
Overall public opinion concerning the project has been positive, which was evident in the results of a resident survey included in the 2013 CPTED pilot project in which 63 percent of survey participants stated they were satisfied with the project and 58.5 percent felt safer after its implementation.
