Busan City officially launched its bid to host the 2020 Summer Olympic Games. Busan City Mayor Hur Nam-sik announced on July 20, “In an attempt to host the 2020 Olympic Games, we will conduct a feasibility study in August and set up a public Bid Committee.”

When asked about municipal administration by Busan Metropolitan Council member Ha Seon-gyu, Mayor Hur explained, “We will present strategies to gain the upper hand externally by building a consensus on Busan’s bid to host the 2020 Olympic Games as PyeongChang recently lost its bid to host the 2014 Winter Olympics.”

After sports agencies in Busan made a commitment to bid for the Olympic Games during the progress report presentation on the 2007 National Sports Festival on July 26, Busan City will broaden the scope of its bid campaign to the public level.

To avoid competition with other cities or provinces and to lay groundwork for its promotion activities, the city will take a series of measures to muster public support, such as getting the approval from the central government within this year and carrying out public presentations and a signature drive.

As many IOC members are expected to participate in the 2008 Busan TAFISA World Sport for All Games, the city will take this and other international sports events including the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games as a good opportunity to promote its successful bidding for the Games.

Given the convention of rotating the Olympic Games among continents, the 2020 Summer Olympic Games is highly likely to be held in Asia, following the 2008 Games in Beijing, China, the 2012 Games in London, UK and the 2016 Games most likely in Chicago, the U.S. There is a high possibility that Busan City can host the 2020 Summer Olympic Games if the city can preempt the promotion activities.

Busan City Mayor Hur Nam-sik included the bid to host the 2020 Busan Olympics into ‘2020 Busan Development Vision and Strategy’ and officially announced the desire at the press conference during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum in November, 2005.
