Busan and Istanbul, Turkey's cultural and financial center, have had a sister-city affiliation since June 2002.
Korea's Istanbul Culture Center hosted the cultural event along with the City of Busan, the Korea-Turkey Friendship Association and City of Istanbul in commemoration of the two countries' 50th year of friendship.
During the event, around 80 Turkish pieces of art, including the traditional painting "Miniature," an oil painting drawn on papyrus, and pictures of Istanbul, will be displayed.
Turkey oversaw the birth of major civilizations such as the Byzantine and Ottoman Empires. Because of its strategic location, where two continents meet, its culture has a unique blend of Eastern and Western tradition, often described as a bridge between the two civilizations and a museum of human civilization.
For Korean people, Turkey is known as a "brotherly country." Despite the long distance, Turkey dispatched nearly 5,500 troops during the 1950-53 Korean War, the fifth largest contributor to the defense of the South.
Busan officials said that the Istanbul Culture Exhibition will be a great opportunity for citizens to better understand Turkey's history and marvelous culture.
The event finishes on next Saturday (August 11).
