Busan Establishes Friendship City Ties with Nagasaki Prefecture

The City of Busan has established a Friendship City Relationship with Nagasaki Prefecture in Japan to strengthen ties of cooperation and expand mutual understanding through exchanges in areas including culture, tourism, education, urban restoration and the economy.

Busan mayor Hur Nam-sik and Governor Hodo Nakamura of Nagasaki Prefecture signed the agreement on March 25 at Busan City Hall.

With the inclusion of the Nagasaki Prefecture, the City of Busan currently has seven friendship city ties and 26 sister cities agreements.

The Nagasaki Prefecture has collaborated with the city in the areas of tourism, fisheries, administrative exchanges, youth exchange projects, and the environment as a member prefecture of the Korea-Japan Strait Coastal Region Governors' Meeting since 1992.

The Busan Museum of Art and the Nagasaki Prefectural Art Museum also concluded an art exchange agreement in August 2011. The exchange includes a variety of exhibits including those featuring children’s art as well as a collaboration on new art technologies which are being actively pursued and introduced.  

Korea and Japan have agreed to apply to UNESCO to seek UNESCO World Heritage status for the Joseon Tongsinsa, which were goodwill missions sent by Korea to Japan during the Joseon Dynasty. The move is seen to preserve the historic significance of the Joseon Tongsinsa and to promote and strengthen ties between the two countries.

After the agreement signing, Busan Museum established a close relationship with the Nagasaki Museum of History & Culture to convey the cultural heritage of both Korea and Japan to the next generation. The two museums will continue to work together on exchange exhibitions, cooperative research projects, personal exchanges and education programs.  

The City of Busan hopes to create a friendly atmosphere between Korean and Japan through strengthening cooperation between the two regions and plans to expand its role as a global city.

The Nagasaki Prefecture is a prefecture of Japan located on the island of Kyushu. With a population of 1.41 million, the prefecture covers a total area of 4,105 ㎢ and consists of about 600 islands. Nagasaki Prefecture has 13 cities and eight towns.
