Building of an International Industrial Logistics Complex in the vicinity of Busan New Port

Green belt restrictions on 33 square kilometers in the Gangseo area have been lifted. This is certain to help solve the problem of a lack of available industrial land and to enable progress on the construction of an international industrial logistics complex in the vicinity of Busan New Port. The first phase of the building project will begin next year.

 

Busan’s Munhyeon area designated as a specialized financial center for Korea

The Munhyeon Innovation Zone was successfully designated as a specialized financial center in January 2009. Korea Technology Finance Corporation broke ground in the construction of its office building, and the SPC (Special Purpose Company) for the financial center mixed-development project has been established and has started to prepare the site since November.

 

Busan to grow as a cancer treatment and research mecca

Busan City has decided to introduce a heavy ion medical accelerator for cancer treatment at the Asia Cancer Center, which is scheduled to open next April. Creating synergies with Busan National University Hospital, which opened the cancer center in July 2009, Busan is expected to make great strides to become the nation’s most advanced center for cancer treatment and research.

 

The city’s long cherished dream of clean drinking water to come true.

By 2012, a regional water supply system utilizing Nam River Dam will be constructed. By next year, a water pipe improvement project will be completed and the construction of the country’s biggest desalination system will begin.


 


‘Green Busan’ project to establish a greener Busan

Busan Hwamyeong Arboretum and Seokdae Urban Arboretum, the biggest of its kind in the country, will be completed in April 2010 and by 2016 respectively. Jungang Square Park will be built between Samjeon Intersection and SongGong Intersection. Coastal and riverside roads and trails as well as bicycle paths will be established around the city.



 

Busan now home to three leading cultural and tourism festivals in Korea. 

Three annual festivals of Busan – the Pusan International Film Festival (“PIFF”), the “Busan Fireworks Festival, a high-tech multimedia fireworks attracting 1.3 million visitors from home and abroad, and the “GSTAR 2009”, a global gaming festival with the participation of 198 firms from 21 countries making it the biggest ever – have all become major cultural and tourism festivals in Korea.

 

Transformation of the former site of the U.S. Army's Camp Hialeah into a Citizens’ Park

The environmental assessment of the Camp Hialeah site was completed in August 2009. The site of the former Camp Hialeah base is likely to be returned to the city next year after finalizing the Korea-U.S. environmental negotiations for the return of the Camp Hialeah land. It is therefore expected that the construction of Busan Citizens’ Park will break ground next year.



 

Expansion of the subway network; groundbreaking of the Dadae Line  

On November 2009, the work to extend Subway Line 1 from Sinpyeong to Dadaepo broke ground.

Next year, Subway Line 4 (Minam Rotary~Anpyeong, 12.7km) will open and construction will start on a rail connection between Sasang and Hadan. In 2011, the Busan-Gimhae Light Rail line is scheduled to open.  

 

Approval for relocation of 13 public institutions to Busan is completed

The decision was reached to relocate 13 public institutions to Busan, to the Munhyeon (6), Centum (3) and Dongsam (4) areas of the city.

 

Establishment of ecological and cultural parks for the Nakdong River Restoration Project

The construction of sports and water-friendly parks in the Samnak, Hwamyeong and Daejeo areas has already begun has part of the much larger river restoration project. An ecological park will be established in Eulsukdo (Island).
