There is now the chance to enjoy some traditional Korean sled riding in Gijang-gun, Busan, for one month from January 10, 2011. A 5,000 square meter sled riding area is located near
A traditional Korean sled is made of a small wooden board with metal blades attached to them. The rider kneels on top of the sled and moves forwards using pointed wooden sticks. It was the most popular winter game for adults and children, on frozen rivers, fields and paddies during the 1960s and 1970s. Today, indoor ice skating rinks and ski resorts have replaced opportunities to enjoy riding the traditional Korean sled. Korean parents and grandparents will now be able to bring back memories of their childhood and share the fun of traditional Korean sled riding with their own children and grandchildren.
For safe sled riding, various safety devices have been installed. The ride is completely free.
Visitors can also buy specialties of Gijang-gun – water celery from Cheolma, organic rice – and baked sweet potatoes. Part of the proceeds will go to helping the needy in the neighborhood.
An official in Gijang –gun said, “The sled riding will provide family fun for both parents and children in winter. We plan to expand the size of the sled riding ground next year.”
